Concussions: the DGS academic research into them

As most, if not all of you know, I have spent quite a bit of time in my life researching concussions. With the deaths of 3 NHL enforcers this summer, I feel compelled to post a paper I wrote for a class on concussions in athletes. While, I was a student when I wrote this and therefore this paper isn't exactly published, it follows the rules of an academic peer reviewed paper set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA).

To download the 10 page paper :click here:

Note: this was part of a larger project involving several other students, this way my portion of it.

Here's some bullet points headlining what you'll see/important things to note

  • Page 2 (first page of full text) shows that Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) was first defined in 1981, that's 30 years ago...
  • Pages 2-3: the bulleted symptom list of concussions (PCS means these symptoms last for long periods of time after the initial trauma)
  • Page 3: The Reggie Fleming (NHL) Case. Because, well, he's a hockey player and a fighter.
  • Page 6: The Boston University Study linking concussions to Lou Gehrig's Disease
  • Last Page of Text: Ted Johnson of the NFL. While I don't expound on it in this paper, his behavior is actually indicative of depression as well.
  • References Page: So you can look up the articles and sources I used to put this project together.

The Secret Transcript: Rick Rypien Vs NHL Fan

Last night, Rick Rypien attacked a fan during a 6-2 loss by Rypien's Canucks to the Minnesota Wild. Yes, the Wild scored 6 goals against Luongo. That was news to me too. Ok, so here we go.

Rick Rypien, you got the Sean Avery treatment, and what you did was improper and inexcusable.

I think that's enough of a joke it itself.

What I learned from all this:

  1. Damian Cox is an idiot. Seriously, there is NOTHING redeeming about him.
  2. The Canucks are just as bad, the Stars suspended Avery on their own before the NHL got involved, Gillis should have done the same thing.
  3. Rypien needs anger management.
