Concussions: the DGS academic research into them

As most, if not all of you know, I have spent quite a bit of time in my life researching concussions. With the deaths of 3 NHL enforcers this summer, I feel compelled to post a paper I wrote for a class on concussions in athletes. While, I was a student when I wrote this and therefore this paper isn't exactly published, it follows the rules of an academic peer reviewed paper set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA).

To download the 10 page paper :click here:

Note: this was part of a larger project involving several other students, this way my portion of it.

Here's some bullet points headlining what you'll see/important things to note

  • Page 2 (first page of full text) shows that Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) was first defined in 1981, that's 30 years ago...
  • Pages 2-3: the bulleted symptom list of concussions (PCS means these symptoms last for long periods of time after the initial trauma)
  • Page 3: The Reggie Fleming (NHL) Case. Because, well, he's a hockey player and a fighter.
  • Page 6: The Boston University Study linking concussions to Lou Gehrig's Disease
  • Last Page of Text: Ted Johnson of the NFL. While I don't expound on it in this paper, his behavior is actually indicative of depression as well.
  • References Page: So you can look up the articles and sources I used to put this project together.

  1. I would be leery of accepting the conclusion that fewer fights lead to fewer profits. There is way too much going on in this economy (Shifting interests? Failure to adapt marketing to same? No one has any money?) Did nothing else in the game change over the same period?

  2. Very interesting read! Thanks for sharing.

The NHL needs to do more to protect their players, and I'm not referring to only looking at minimizing the fighting in the game. It has to start from the medical system in the NHL, I like the NFL's method if that were to be implemented in every sports league I would think the effects of concussions would surely become less lethal. I also think the type of equipment needs to be re-evaluated whether it's making visors and concussion absorbent helmets mandatory or trying some soft capped shoulder and elbow pads like the OHL has recently implemented.

  3. Awesome looking website. I recently built mine and I was looking for some ideas for my site and you gave me a few. May I ask you whether you developed the website by yourself?
